The Junior Women’s C2 500 races were equally as spectacular as the C1 200 at the 2014 ICF Junior & U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships. Belarus’ Daryna Kastsiuchenka and her expert steerswoman Kamila Bobr set the tone in the heats by winning in a new world record (for any age category) of 1:58.735. In the Final, the Belarusians led from start to finish despite an excellent second 250 meters by the second place Canadian crew of Katie Vincent (C1 200 Jr World Champion) and Juliette Brault.

Russia’s Eleonora Kovalchuck and Olesya Nikiforova battled it out for the bronze with Uzbekistan’s Nilufar Zakirova and Dilnoza Rakhmatova. Uzbekistan held the third position through the 250 but Russia was just too strong in the second half of the race.

With 50 total countries developing and training female canoeists, an Olympic medal now within our grasp, and an increase in women’s canoe events offered at the world level for 2015, we expect even more countries in 2015.
